A cab driver scammed an 18-year-old student from China who was heading from O'Hare International Airport to the Champaign campus of the University of Illinois. When the student arrived at the airport, the driver told him that his bus was not coming and that his only alternative was a taxi ride. The man reportedly offered the unnamed student a ride for $1,000. Then, upon arriving at the student’s dorm in Champaign, IL, the driver allegedly demanded $4,200.
Now, University of Chicago officers are working with police to track down the cab driver who tricked the student. Typically, a cab ride from Chicago to Champaign should cost $300, which is about 14 times less than what the student paid.
