Photos: Telescopes Atop Hawaii's Mauna Kea Volcano

See sweeping panoramas of the Earth and starry night skies

  • Thirteen telescopes operated by 11 countries sit on the summit of Mauna Kea, the dormant volcano rising high over Hawaii's Big Island. Located at 14,000 feet, the peak offers offers one of the best views of the night sky because of the area's dry, cloud-free air and stable atmosphere.

  • Telescope domes on the dormant Mauna Kea Volcano, under the stars of the Milky Way galaxy. This image is a composite of a picture of the two telescopes and a picture of the Milky Way photographed in the southern hemisphere. The large dome houses Keck-1, the world's largest optical telescope. The smaller dome houses NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility. The brightest stars overhead are part of the tail of the constellation Scorpius. Just above Keck-1's dome is the M7 open star cluster.
