The identity of the mysterious “grandma drummer” has finally been revealed, days after a video of the senior rocking out exploded on the Internet. 63-year-old Mary Hvizda has been playing the drums since she was a teenager, but it took until the Coalition Drum Shop uploaded a YouTube clip of her performing at the Wisconsin store to finally get her the recognition she deserves.
The video, which has racked up over 2 million views in just a few days, was shot by the store manager Dustin Hackworth, who told News8 that he decided to finally capture Hvizda on tape after continuously being blown away by her regular performances.
After playing in dozens of bands over the years (including the all-girl rock band La Crosse), Hvizda hung up the sticks professionally around 1990.
"It makes me proud to think that people still think I'm somewhat good,” Hvizda told WKBT. “And still think I'm still something they're interested in watching."
Hvizda, who had to sell her own kit after encountering some financial difficulties, may be doing a few less in-store appearances from now on. Since the store gave her a brand-new drum kit for free, Hvizda can rock out at home anytime she wants. Like any other rock star.
