DENVER — A man injured while hiking on Maroon Bells near Aspen had to be airlifted out by a National Guard Blackhawk helicopter Saturday.
Video of the helicopter rescue was posted to YouTube by Mountain Rescue Aspen.
Alex Burchetta of the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office said a 59-year-old man, part of a group of four, were making their descent from North Maroon Peak when he fell about 50 feet. The man survived the fall but had serious injuries, Burchetta said.
Mountain Rescue Aspen formed a team, which used a flight for life helicopter to reach the man.
The National Guard then sent a helicopter from its High Altitude Aviation Training Site in Gypsum to recover the man and taken him to a local hospital.
The YouTube video shows the helicopter slowly approaching the side of the mountain and touching a single wheel onto the ground as several people climb on board.
The man, who has not been identified, is expected to make a full recovery.
