Immigrants demand transplants at Chicago hospital

CHICAGO (AP)Protesters demanding organ transplants for immigrants who are in the country illegally have gathered outside Chicago's Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

The group of about 40 includes about a dozen or so hunger strikers. They say they represent immigrants from Mexico who are being denied transplants because they can't pay for them.

The protesters showed up Sunday and say they won't leave until their demands are met. They protested previously at other Chicago-area hospitals, too.

They say hospitals will take immigrants' organs, but won't give them transplants.

Father Jose Landaverde (Hoe-ZAY Lahn-duh-VAIR'-Day) said Monday that the group is demanding justice.

Northwestern didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.
