Road crew motivated by Hubbard’s comment gets stretch of Highway 34 open

WELD COUNTY, Colo. — A crucial stretch of U.S. Highway 34 washed out in the flood last month was back open Wednesday, thanks to the incredible work of a construction crew, and in part to FOX31 Denver anchor Jeremy Hubbard’s cynicism.

The road crews used a comment Hubbard made while covering the flood situation as motivation to get the job done.  They were watching the newscast two weeks ago when Hubbard reported officials believed the washed out highway could be rebuilt in a couple of weeks.

Hubbard commented that while the optimism was good, he wasn’t sure based on the condition of the road that it could be accomplished that quickly.

“I should never have doubted these guys,” Hubbard said Wednesday night during FOX31 Denver News at 9 p.m. “A crew of contractors from Zak Dirt worked day and night for the last two weeks to prove me wrong. They emailed us yesterday (Tuesday) – saying my comment was what motivated them. They completely reconstructed this stretch of Highway 34.”

Angelo Mancina ran the project. The crew finished the project at 4:30 Tuesday morning, a few hours ahead of schedule.  The road was back open. SkyFOX flew over the 100-yard stretch of road that is still surrounded by water in the S. Platte River Wednesday, to show the traffic that was moving on it.

It’s an important connection between Greeley and Kersey.

“So to Angelo and the rest of that crew, I will never doubt you again. Great job,” Hubbard said.
